Unit 3: Epic Theatre (Bertolt Brecht) Study: Final Performance Evaluation

Part 1: Discuss the challenges you faced individually and as an overall group in performing a piece of Epic Theatre. How was it different from other performances you have participated in?

The challenges that i face as an individual during the final performance was when i was up on stage, there was a moment where i could not remember what i was supposed to say as i forgot my line. So during my part, one of the group member (Hamza) covered up for me by extending his lines and improvising, so it didn't really seem like I really messed up as i had a straight face on, throughout the entire performance. This performance of mine was different performances that i have participated in because theme of the play and script was completely different as i had to play a different character. This performance was also a bit challenging for me as there was a lot of line memorizing to do and, myself as an individual am not fairly good at memorizing lines.

Part 2: How would you grade yourself in terms of Personal Engagement throughout this task? What were your contributions to the performance? What would you score yourself and each of your group members using the Personal Engagement (Crit D) descriptors? Be specific and use clear evidence to justify your assertions.

In terms of personal engagement throughout this task, i would give myself a 4 because there were times during the practice sessions where i would go off task and not focus on what i am and was supposed to be working and focussing on. As per for my group members i would give Ayat a 6 as she was the most dedicated and focussed member in the group, and since she was the one who kept on pushing the other members to concentrate on what they were supposed to be focussing on. I would give Hamza a 5 because he was also very focussed and dedicated to what he was doing and he was also acting and saying his lines without having any sort of flaws in them,  I would give Mushanna a 5 because she had the biggest and longest lines to memorize and she memorized is very well, so when she went on stage for the final performance she said her lines without messing up. I would give Ulughbek a 4 because i think that him and I were on the same stage when it came to staying focussed and determined in class, when we were really supposed to be working and practicing our parts and lines.

Part 3: Evaluate YOUR group's final performance using Crit B descriptors for "Application." What worked well during your performance? What needed improvement? Do you think your audience understood your "big issue?" How do you know? Do you think you effectively created a piece of Epic Theatre? Why or why not?

During the final performance i think that my group did an 'okay' job, whereas we could have done a better job if members such as myself had memorized their lines properly and well enough so that while performing there would not be any flaws. I personally think that our performance needed improvement because of the mess up's that we have made such as the entrance time for the wife of the fat prince. There should have been a cue for her to enter so that the performance went a bit more smooth. I don't think that the audience understood our "big issue" as they all seemed very confused by the looks on their faces. I think that we did create a piece of epic theatre but it was not as effective as it could have been because of the lines from the script. I could not really understand the play myself, whereas i thought how would the audience understand it if i can't understand it. I thought that overall it was just very confusing.

Part 4: Evaluate the work of another group using Crit B descriptors in relation to Epic Theatre elements and "The Caucasian Chalk Circle" text. Did the group meet your expectations for the scene? You will receive a Crit A grade for this part of the task, so be sure to use the language of the descriptors and provide sufficient evidence to support your evaluation.

The group that i chose to evaluate was noshin, shubham, and mifra's performance. I personally think that the group met up to my expectations for the scene. The grade that i want to five this group for their performance is a 6 because i think that they met the expectations and the levels of the criteria level. Overall, i personally think that this group had the right elements and the performer's knew their line's very well and they had their script/lines memorized perfectly. So they didn't mess up during the final performance which is something that my group was lacking.

Personal and Group Reflection on rough Performance.

I personally think that as a group we could have done better in our performance as the line's were not memorized properly and the things that were meant to be the in the act were not included in it. As per in for my own performance i think that i could have done a better job if i had my lines memorized properly, so that in the performance i wouldn't have had to stutter or look at the script because it makes the performance itself look unprofessional. In order to fix the mistakes that we have made as a group and as an actor myself, i think that we should have better practice, and involve the things that were meant to be involved in the play overall. I also think that in the rough performance we were disengaged which is something that we as a group need to work on and fix, so that in the final performance it looks absolutely flawless.
